Smile Tiles are handmade by ceramic artist Samuel Leighton-Dore in Broadbeach Waters, Queensland. The tiles are rolled out and cut from earthenware clay, engraved by hand, dried, and then bisque fired in a small at-home kiln. Tiles are then underglazed three times — finished carefully by hand with black underglaze lettering and fired once more to make them shiny.
